Biography
A graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Emily Murdock is quickly establishing herself on the operatic and concert stage. This summer she joined PORTopera in Portland, Maine, singing in Mozart's The Impresario and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel.
During her graduate studies at CU, Emily performed several roles including Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia), Papagena (Die Zauberflöte), Amor (Orfeo ed Euridice), Adele (Die Fledermaus), and Kitty Hart in the academic premiere of Jake Heggie's opera Dead Man Walking. Other operatic experiences include Carolina in Il Matrimonio Segreto with Pine Mountain Music Festival, Phyllis in Iolanthe with Colorado Light Opera, and Queen of the Night with the University of Montana Opera Theater.
Emily enjoys singing concert and recital repertoire as well as opera, and has appeared as soloist with regional orchestras and choral organizations in both Montana and Colorado, singing repertoire including Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate, and Handel’s Messiah. She was also featured with the University of Colorado Orchestra as a winner of the Honors Concerto Competition, singing Darius Milhaud's Chansons de Ronsard. In August of 2008, Emily traveled to Leibnitz, Austria, to participate in LIED Austria, a program focusing on the relationship between poetry and music in German lieder.
Emily has been successful in several multi-round competitions, appearing as National Semi-Finalist in the NATS Artist Award recital competition in 2008, National Finalist in the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Competition in 2005, and Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2004.
Emily earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice and Flute Performance at the University of Montana in 2004. She makes her home in Boulder, Colorado, and studies with mezzo-soprano Julie Simson. Emily is a native of Whitefish, Montana.
